John Croes papers, 1814-1835.

Papers relating to Croes chiefly concern his episcopate and affairs of the Diocese of New Jersey. Most of the correspondence is with Bishop James Kemp of Maryland, and the Reverend William Rollinson Whittingham before he became Bishop. Early papers cover Croes's election as Bishop of Connecticut, which he declined, followed by election as Bishop of New Jersey in 1815. Subjects include a description of his consecration, his desire for strict observance of the Prayer Book, disapproval of collaboration with Presbyterians and other sects, family affairs, and many clergy matters. Substantial materials deal with the conduct of the General Theological Seminary in New York, of which Croes was a trustee. Other letters concern Whittingham's role there and his rectorship of St. Mark's Parish, Orange, N.J. (1829-1830).
